Little Gold's latest offering, Spectral Sight, is at once a breakup record, a road trip record, and a cautionary tale about the perils of messing with witches. After two LPs, two 7" singles, and two lineups, Christian DeRoeck left NYC for the more laid back creative environs of Athens, GA. The change of scenery suits his songs; dude has always sung with a bit of a drawl. His new band of Athens miscreants features drummer Chase Merritt, guitarist Taylor Chmura, and bassist Brandon Page. Spectral Sight also includes Dead Dog's John McLean on bass, as well as appearances from Mat Lewis of Grape Soda, and Erin Lovett of Four Eyes.
From the opening lines of "Solar Sister II" (a nod to the Posies song of the same name) - "I don't know the roads / I get so lost every time I drive you home" - we know we are on a journey. We are a fly on the wall when you bump into your ex buying wine and magazines in the self-checkout line ("Satisfriction"). We are taken back to the Salem witch trials ("Spectral Sight and "Rebecca Nurse"), the anxiety and paranoia palpable - "everything you do they'll use to hurt you / and when you speak they shake". "Tiny Hours" finds DeRoeck back in Brooklyn, listening to Luna at 5am and gazing out the window at the apartment across the street, pretty sure what he's looking for is somewhere inside.
Recorded by BC Fortenberry (Grape Soda, Four Eyes) in Athens over the summer and fall of 2013. Drums were tracked to tape at the band's home studio, then they relocated to Fortenberry's studio for basic tracks and overdubs. Two songs, "Tiny Hours" and "Bombs Away", were recorded entirely to tape in DeRoeck's bedroom in the tiny hours of the morning. The result is a sort of hybrid album; Spectral Sight is unmistakably a band effort, but with the intimacy and warmth of a songwriter's record.
